Saw him play! Really! Played for New York Cosmos in the late 1970s when they played Hong Kong. Pele was also a player, but retired. They used his face and name to sell tickets.

He seemed to have been a really good player, too young to have seen him play in his pomp, but that goal from 1970, will be played to footballing fans long after we have all popped our clogs.
RIP

Remember that goal against Italy in 1970. That was a great tournament, with that Banks save also, but the commentators sounded like they were on Mars.
IIRC, I think it was first time TV used special effects in a sporting context: ITV had an Italian player flipping forwards and backwards. Brian Moore, Paddy Crerend, Derek Dougan were all in stitches at the amazing technology.
RIP Carlos.

I'd love to see footage of the 1970 ITV World Cup panel. Dougan, Allison, Crerand and McNabb.

There is a brilliant documentary about the New York Cosmos well worth a watch called Once In A Lifetime (The Extraordinary Story of The New York Cosmos) I never knew so many players went to play there during the mid to late 70s

Before the last World Cup they showed loads of old footage of bygone World Cups on film, in a series of documentaries.
One was on Mexico 1970. It had the same little kid who appeared in all footage, who was presumably the director's son or something. The 1970 one was the best, it was really funny.
