I remember watching this pretty much the first time round on ITV. Think a 21st century version of Callan/The Equalizer with a bit of The Professionals thrown in (mainly thanks to Peter Mullen's gruff Cowley-like boss) and two unlikely sidekicks (Tamsin Outhwaite's tarty ex-cop Rose and Jody Latham's streetwise Callum). Andrew Buchan is the taciturn anti-hero John Mercer, released from prison after killing his aunt and uncle for abusing his beloved sister (Liz White). He meets the mysterious Lennie (Mullen) who wants him as an assassin, taking out criminals that the law can't touch. The 1st series I found a tad slow in places, but it was okay whereas the 2nd series was much better because now there was a spook involved in Mercer's missions, Buchan looked much more convincing and intense as a tough guy and there was more action, particularly in one episode which was about bare knuckle fighting (when I saw this on ITV, the continuity announcer gave a warning over its violence). The final episode was also extremely grim, rather like the last episode of Thief Takers (the Reece Dinsdale era).
"What was I thinking of, hitting him? Nothing. No, I know. I hate him! I hate his guts, I hate everything he stands for with his PACE and his plus and his statements of purpose and his smiling at the punters and his have a nice day! I mean when was the last time he ever nicked anybody, eh? A real villain! When was the last time he ever put himself on the line?"
Now then, there ain't much TV past end of Minder (1994) that I really liked to watch but this is one of the exceptions. I missed the the majority of the start and got into it quite late on but was hooked. The lead character has a major personality disorder but as dsc says, a very worthwhile show that is definitely worth a view.
I know some who don't rate 'The Fixer' but I for one am a real fan - this is a real stand out show produced during a time where the majority of stuff on British telly was utter tat. I don't have it but at some point I would really like to revisit this. I was pretty miffed when ITV cancelled this show.

Daley & McCann are, as good as, holding hands, on the exercise yard, in the scrubs.
I was a fan of this too. The excellent Peter Mullan and Andrew Buchan brought this programme to life for me and was a bit miffed when it was dropped. Not for the first time something I liked was dropped, but I am sure it was up against 'Waking the Dead', which I have to admit being a fan of and was a big ratings winner for the BBC.
The days of programmes getting a series or three to find a fan base are long gone.
