I was given the complete series of 1974-75 episodes a few years ago and having not seen them since I was very young have started watching them again with my own wee'un.
I have to say these are thoroughly enjoyable to watch with a pirate vibe cranked up to the max. It is not hilarious but Captain Pugwash is clearly a pretty rubbish pirate and without Tom the Cabin Boy, the crew of 'The Black Pig' would have drowned years ago.
Writer John Ryan's daughter has said that the double entendres and urban myths surrounding this show seriously affected her late father's health.
Although it is a shame this happened to this show, which Ryan won damages for in the early 90s, I would say these urban myths most certainly kept Captain Pugwash, Barnabas, Master Mate, Pirate Willy and Tom the Cabin Boy in the public consciousness, albeit for the wrong reasons.
I have not seen any of the 1957 episodes or the 1998 series (are these around?) but if you fancy 10 minutes of major retro kids TV, 70s Pugwash and his badly animated team are definitely worth a minor splurge now and again.
Forgetting all the urban myths, the 70s series is top quality kids TV in my opinion.

Daley & McCann are, as good as, holding hands, on the exercise yard, in the scrubs.
'Mary Mungo & Midge' was another creation of his. I preferred MM&M in childhood, but having bought the DVD in more recent times it seemed slow. And the introduction sequence was long & repetitive in each episode.
