This was one filmed that mullered by the critics but I quite liked it. A very good cast: Miranda Richardson, Rutger Hauer, Peter Vaughn, (Upstairs, Downstairs) Jean Marsh, the wonderful Michael Kitchen...
The main criticism was it didn't stack up to the original book. However, for me, there's been scores of 'what ifs' based on WWII. Good film nonetheless.
It looks great, on what I imagine must have been a very limited budget. Good actors and performances (although Michael Kitchen is miscast - should have been Mark Addy or a similarly rotund actor). It does lack something compared to the book. I know film adaptatations can't always be faithful but the fiddling around with the book's alternative timeline is quite crass e.g. Nazi Germany was victorious after repelling the D-Day invasion. Even if they'd managed that they'd have still been steam rollered by the Soviets coming from the East.
